MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – At least 6 soldiers, including 2 officers, were killed after an army corporal ran amok inside an army camp in Sumisip town, Basilan on Thursday, October 22.

According to Colonel Melsan Recaido, a corporal from the 64 Infantry Battalion (IB) began shooting inside the unit’s headquarters in Sumisip just before 9 am.

It was initially reported that only 4 were killed and 11 injured but in a briefing with media in Manila, Army spokesman Colonel Benjamin Hao said 6 were killed while 9 were injured.

The shooter was identified as Coporal Tahiruddinn Taha, a member of the 64th IB's Bravo Company.

Hao said the shooting happened during a Bible study session inside the same camp. The pastor who led the Bible study was also among those killed, said Hao.

The injured have since been airlifted to a nearby military hospital.
