Aquino appoints chief legal counsel as new DOJ chief

MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III has appointed Chief Presidential Counsel Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa as ad interim justice secretary, Malacañang announced on Tuesday, October 13.

Quoting Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr, Palace Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr said in a statement that a transmittal letter on Caguioa’s appointment has been sent to the Commission on Appointments.

Caguioa fills in the vacancy left by Leila de Lima, who resigned to run for the Senate

Caguioa obtained his degree in Economics (Honors Program) from the College of Arts and Sciences of Ateneo de Manila University in 1981 (Honorable Mention). He graduated with honors from the Ateneo College of Law in 1985, ranking fifth in his class.

He was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1986 after placing 15th in the 1985 Bar examinations.

Caguioa was the President's classmate at the Ateneo from grade school to college, where both finished economics. He was appointed as chief legal counsel in January 2013. – Rappler.com
