4 more PH schools in 2016 Asian university rankings

MANILA, Philippines – Four Philippine higher education institutions join the University of the Philippines (UP), the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), the De La Salle University (DLSU), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in the 2016 QS University Rankings for Asia.

Aside from the 4 prominent universities, the list now includes the following schools: Ateneo de Davao University (251-300), Silliman University (251-300), Xavier University (251-300), and University of San Carlos (301-350).

The last time Ateneo de Davao University made it to the list was in 2014, with a ranking of 251st. Meanwhile, the 3 other schools are joining the annual rankings for the first time. 

UP maintained its top spot among Philippine schools with the same ranking (70th) from last year, but it is no longer the only Philippine school in the top 100. AdMU jumped from 114th in 2015 to 99 in 2016. (READ: School rankings in ASEAN: A 'perception game' for PH)

DLSU is now the 3rd top Philippine school at 143rd in the list, while UST slipped to 157th this year from 143rd in 2015.

UST again received Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) stars (4 Stars) after it was rated excellently in the following criteria: employability, facilities, social responsibility, and inclusiveness. (READ: The ASEAN template: Producing graduates who fit the bill)

Since 2009, the QS Asian University Rankings have been published annually by the QS.

The annual list aims to highlight the top universities in Asia, "shining a spotlight on the rapid development of many higher education systems in this dynamic world region."

Top 10

The National University of Singapore again outnumbered 350 top universities in Asia. Tsinghua University in China made it to the top 10 after ranking 11th in the 2015 list.

Hong Kong has the most number of schools in the top 10.

The QS University Rankings for Asia adopts a methodology that consists of 10 indicators:

  • academic reputation (30%)
  • employer reputation (20%)
  • faculty-student ratio (15%)
  • citations per paper (10%)
  • papers per faculty (10%)
  • staff with a PhD (5%)
  • international faculty (2.5%)
  • international students (2.5%)
  • inbound exchange students (2.5%)
  • outbound exchange students (2.5%)
