JAKARTA, Indonesia – This is the story of Apipa, a young Muslim girl who travels from her hometown to live with a Christian family in Jakarta.
“The first time I met them, I was so afraid because I am afraid of people from other religions," she said.
This fear stemmed from her personal experience when a non-Muslim classmate insulted her religion in school.
On the other hand in Jakarta, Raymond Lim who hosts Apipa was happy but anxious on how he would bond with the young girl.
“I thought to myself, it would not be easy to bond with her but I was determined to bond with her," said Lim.
It is no secret that Indonesia has much ethnic diversity, which comes at a price with occasional religion-based violence. Although the country has the world’s largest Muslim population, the government is secular and recognizes six different religions.
