'Annoying chime,' drama, well wishes in proclamation

MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Camarines Sur 3rd District Representative Leni Robredo were officially proclaimed as president-elect and vice president-elect of the Republic of the Philippines on Monday, May 30.

Never quiet on social media, Filipinos also proclaimed their sentiments on #ProclamationDay by sharing their thoughts online.

'Batasang Pambansa Department Store'

Because some lawmakers took their own sweet time and arrived late at the session hall, the alarm or chime had to be played on repeat to signal that session was about to begin. Talk about disrupting a historic moment – and turning the House of Representatives into a pseudo-department store, as one netizen put it.

'Isang bagsak para kay Leni'

With the president-elect skipping the proclamation, all eyes were definitely on the vice president-elect.

As soon as she arrived, Robredo's colleagues and other well-wishers congratulated her for her victory over Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

The crowd at the Batasang Pambansa also erupted in applause whenever Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, chair of the Senate panel in the joint canvassing committee, mentioned Robredo's name.

A bit of drama

It wasn't all good vibes, however. Northern Samar Representative Harlin Abayon interrupted the session, saying that his name was not called during the roll call. (Abayon was recently involved in his own political and legal battle.) The House sergeant-at-arms was eventually instructed to escort Abayon out of the session hall.
