NPA rebels abduct Davao Oriental town police chief

NPA ATTACK. The New People's Army opens fire at the police station of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental on May 29, 2016.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Around 70 members of the New People's Army (NPA) attacked the police station of the municipality of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental province on Sunday, May 29.

The communist rebels arrived at the police station around 7:45 pm and immediately opened fire.

Davao Oriental provincial director Senior Superintendent Harry Espela said Chief Inspector Arnold Ongachen led 14 police officers on duty when the rebels stormed the station.

Residents reported hearing heavy exchange of gunfire for about an hour. The police, however, eventually ran out of bullets.

After the firefight, the rebels abducted Ongachen and fled toward the eastern part of Barangay Sigaboy.

The attack also left PO3 Johnray Cinco wounded.

Philippine Army soldiers are pursuing the rebels. – Rappler.com
