MANILA, Philippines – Rappler talks to Australian Warren Rodwell, a former Abu Sayyaf hostage, about terrorism.
In a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Rodwell claimed that the Abu Sayyaf's recent beheading of a Canadian hostage was "not an Islamic State terror act," but because of a failure to meet a ransom deadline.
Rodwell was in a similar situation more than 3 years ago – the ransom demand for his release went as high as US$2 million. In Maria Ressa's Though Leaders piece on Rodwell, his kidnappers made use of technology to show proof-of-life video messages and photos were posted on YouTube and Facebook.
